Renewed Cooperation in a Troubled Hemisphere – Towards the Summit of the Americas

On March 31, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a public event to present its biennial Sol M. Linowitz policy report titled: “The Case for Renewed Cooperation in a Troubled Hemisphere: Towards the Ninth Summit of the Americas”. During the event, panelists discussed the main findings and recommendations of the report and analyzed the current state of regional and hemispheric cooperation.

Family Remittances in 2021: Is Double-Digit Growth the New Normal?

This report provides a review of the trends that led to growth in family remittances in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2021. It points to a combination of factors that include increased migration, migrants prolonging their stay in the United States, use of digital transfers among others. It also introduces projections based on future migration and remittance sender changes in 2022.

On March 16, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a conversation with Assistant Secretary Brian A. Nichols to discuss the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to tackle the root causes of migration from Central America to the United States. Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, introduced the conversation, which was moderated by Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances, and Development program at the Dialogue.

Orozco: “La trayectoria económica de Nicaragua es muy lamentable y no repuntará para el bien del país”

Manuel Orozco, director del Programa de Migraciones, Remesas y Desarrollo del Diálogo Interamericano, compartió su análisis sobre la situación de Nicaragua en el 2022 en Confidencial. Según Orozco, Nicaragua será afectada por el desempleo, ingresos limitados, contracción crediticia, endeudamiento externo y aislamiento internacional. Asimismo, Orozco examinó la emigración de nicaragüenses y el incremento de envío de remesas en medio de la crisis.

Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, was interviewed by The Washington Diplomat on the current state of Latin American. The conversation examined the continuing migration on the US border with Mexico, the widespread regional discontent during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the lack of integration among Latin American countries as they continue fighting the effects of the pandemic.

A Commitment to Family: Remittances and Covid-19

This report from the Migration, Remittances & Development Program presents the findings of a survey carried out with more than 1,000 US immigrants from eight Latin American and Caribbean nationalities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study identifies critical aspects that shaped migrants’ experiences in 2020 and early 2021, and, more importantly, the determinants of continuing to send money back home in times of crisis.

El 28 de enero del 2021, El Diálogo Interamericano, en colaboración con la Red Nacional de Grupos Gestores de Guatemala-San Marcos, organizó un conversatorio privado, “La migración como elemento del desarrollo integral: Alianzas y prácticas para su inclusión estratégica” con el apoyo de Cities Alliance. El conversatorio se concentró en el caso guatemalteco con el objetivo de socializar y discutir perspectivas planteadas por actores que trabajan con los lugares de origen, destino y retorno.

Migration and Cities in Guatemala: Remittances’ Potential Role for Housing

On August 27, 2020, the first virtual session of a Housing Laboratory on Migration and Cities in Guatemala (LAV by its Spanish initials) was held. As Guatemala’s National Housing Council (CONAVI) works to update Guatemala’s National Policy on Housing and Human Settlements with strategies to increase access to decent, sustainable housing, this event contributed to discussions regarding the potential that remittances offer for financing the provision of decent and broader urban development.

Gender and remittances: Preliminary notes about senders and recipients in Latin America and the Caribbean

Within the changing landscape of migration where both men and women are moving across borders, remittance transfers also follow gendered lines. These dynamics are the differences in sex and social practices that signify the presence of prevailing relationships in the broader context of contemporary transnational migration (Ramirez 2005).

Covid-19: Tendencias en las remesas y propuestas para modernizar la industria

El 10 de julio, Manuel Orozco, el director del Programa de Migración, Remesas y Desarrollo del Diálogo Interamericano, participó en una conversación sobre las tendencias en el envío de remesas hacia América Latina durante la pandemia de Covid-19.
