Engaging Networks to Address the Covid-19 Pandemic in Guatemala

In recent months, the Inter-American Dialogue has been honored to work with its network of partners to support pandemic response efforts in the Guatemalan communities where we work. Following a generous donation of Covid-19 testing supplies and PPE equipment from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Cities Alliance, the Dialogue was proud to facilitate coordination between regional entities, municipal authorities, hospitals, and donors to prioritize needs and distribute supplies.

Private Roundtable on US-Mexico Energy Cooperation

The energy markets of the United States and Mexico are deeply integrated, to the benefit of both countries and their economies. The new US administration has a clear interest in preserving and expanding this fruitful relationship while advancing its ambitious clean energy and climate goals, both at home and abroad. On March 11, the Inter-American Dialogue held a private roundtable on US-Mexico energy cooperation.

The Road to Legal Abortion in Argentina

On February 25, 2021, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted the webinar “The Road to Legal Abortion in Argentina” in partnership with the Embassy of Argentina in Washington, DC, and the International Planned Parenthood Federation Western Hemisphere Region (IPPFWHR). Panelists discussed the winning strategy employed by the feminist movement to promote passage of the law to legalize abortion, the challenges they encountered, and how they leveraged resources to produce a favorable outcome.

Desarrollo para Guatemala: El cómo desde la migración

El 28 de enero del 2021, El Diálogo Interamericano, en colaboración con la Red Nacional de Grupos Gestores de Guatemala-San Marcos, organizó un conversatorio privado, “La migración como elemento del desarrollo integral: Alianzas y prácticas para su inclusión estratégica” con el apoyo de Cities Alliance. El conversatorio se concentró en el caso guatemalteco con el objetivo de socializar y discutir perspectivas planteadas por actores que trabajan con los lugares de origen, destino y retorno.

Private Roundtable on US-Brazil Energy & Climate Cooperation

Energy and climate change are important aspects of the US-Brazil relationship and will only become more prominent under the Biden administration. Brazil and the US are important diplomatic and trade partners in the hemisphere, and both countries have the potential to make major contributions to combating climate change and developing more sustainable and reliable energy systems. In collaboration with FGV Energia, on February 26, the Inter-American Dialogue held a private virtual roundtable on US-Brazil energy and climate cooperation.

Housing Laboratory on Migration and Cities in Guatemala Video

Linking Migration to Housing and Urban Planning in Guatemala

On October 29, 2020, the second virtual session of the Housing Laboratory on Migration and Cities in Guatemala (LAV for its initials in Spanish) took place. The Housing Laboratory’s objective was to explore the role of urban and land use planning in the context of international migration and return migration. It further considered how these processes can be integrated into Guatemala’s National Housing Council’s (CONAVI) ongoing efforts to update Guatemala’s National Policy on Housing and Human Settlements in order to guarantee access to decent housing and boost local economic development.

Taking into account the Biden administration’s plan for Central America, speakers addressed the region’s doubts, needs and aspirations with respect to US partnerships toward short-term and long-term development in the region.

Durante un evento del Diálogo Interamericano el 16 de diciembre, se enfatizó en que a medida que las economías intentan reconstruirse luego de la crisis generada por el Covid-19, surge la oportunidad de acelerar la mitigación del cambio climático, la adaptación al mismo, y de elaborar modelos económicos más sostenibles. Los ingresos de las industrias extractivas pueden proporcionar recursos cruciales para cumplir este objetivo bajo un modelo eficiente en términos de inclusión social e impacto ambiental.
