The G-20 summit features high drama on the turbulent global stage, with U.S. President Donald Trump, China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin playing leading roles.
This G-20 summit was once considered an opportunity for Latin American members Argentina, Brazil and Mexico to project a regional bloc to shape a global agenda. But that turned out to be a fleeting aspiration.
The fact that the G-20 is taking place in South America for the first time is almost beside the point. Argentine President Mauricio Macri, the summit's host, has lowered expectations. Now a success would be a summit meeting that goes smoothly, without any major disruption.
Latin American countries are still looking to China as a critical partner and creditor. The ways countries are engaging with China might change slightly, but the fundamentals of their bilateral relations with China will withstand political changes.
There are interesting parallels [between Trump and Bolsonaro]; a lot of news outlets that started out being more restrained, and that gave them access, are now in kind of open war with Trump, CNN being the biggest example. I bet all these media outlets are trying to figure out how to deal with this situation. Do they want to be cut out, do they want to be part of it, and if so how do they position themselves?
