ONLINE EVENT: Low-Carbon Hydrogen in LAC – Prospects and Pathways

Event Summary This event has passed.

The use of hydrogen gas as a fuel is increasingly recognized as a key element in reaching total global decarbonization. In particular, “green” hydrogen (which is produced using renewable energy) is a promising zero-carbon fuel for heavy transport, electricity storage, and heavy industry sectors that are otherwise difficult to decarbonize.

Numerous countries in Latin America have begun crafting, and in some cases implementing, plans to attract investment in hydrogen—particularly green hydrogen, given the region’s abundant renewable resources. Chile launched its pioneering green hydrogen strategy in November 2020, while Colombia published its hydrogen roadmap in September 2021. Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Uruguay, and other countries are in different stages of hydrogen strategy development as well, with some countries aspiring to convert their rich renewable energy resources into green hydrogen for export.

What is green hydrogen’s potential in Latin America, and what measures are required to unlock it? This event will explore government and private sector plans for hydrogen in the region, the barriers to producing low-carbon hydrogen and the prospects for its use in different applications, and strategies for intersectoral and international cooperation to advance this important technology. A keynote address by Claudio Huepe Minoletti, minister of energy of Chile, will be followed by a Q&A session and a panel discussion. For more information and a list of speakers, see the agenda below.

We invite participants to submit questions through the Q&A function in Zoom.
