Member in the News: Richard Haass

In January 2023, Dialogue member Richard Haass released a new book, The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens. Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, joined the Inter-American Dialogue as a member in 2004. Haass is a decorated civil servant, accomplished diplomat, and acclaimed scholar, holding recognitions such as the Presidential Citizens Medal and the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award.

In his new book, Haass proposes new obligations for American citizenship, which are "essential for healing American divisions and safeguarding the country’s future." According to the Council on Foreign Relations, "These obligations re-envision what it means to be an American citizen. They are not a burden, but rather commitments that we make to fellow citizens and to the government to uphold democracy and counter the growing apathy, anger, selfishness, division, disinformation, and violence that threaten us all."

Richard Haass is a member of the Inter-American Dialogue.
