
Ecuador’s Elections & Political Outlook
Although the ruling coalition retained control of the majority of Ecuador’s municipalities, it lost in the country’s major cities.
On May 24, Dialogue member Mia Amor Mottley was elected Prime Minister of Barbados after the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won the general election. Mottley will be the first female prime minister since Barbados became independent in 1966. Mottley will be the fifth female head of government in the English speaking Caribbean joining the likes of the late Dame Eugenia Charles of Dominica, Janet Jagan of Guyana, Portia Simpson Miller in Jamaica and Kamla Persad Bissessar in Trinidad and Tobago.
Mottley became a member of the Inter-American Dialogue in 2016.

Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, received the 2021 Champion of the Earth award for Policy Leadership by the United Nations Environment Programme, the UN’s highest environmental honor.
