Mexico: How Far Have its Institutions Really Come?
The question remains if Mexico has achieved a degree of institutional development consistent with its participation in those organizations.
On June 13, 2023, Inter-American Dialogue member and Mexican Ambassador to Chile, Alicia Bárcena, was appointed as Mexico’s Foreign Minister by President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Bárcena has a distinguished career in public service and diplomacy, as well as multilateral organizations. She was previously the executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and a founding director of the Earth Council in Costa Rica. "She's a professional, a diplomat, a woman with convictions, with principles...and she's going to help in this last stretch of the government," said President Lopez Obrador. Bárcena is set to begin her post in late June 2023, following approval from Mexico’s Senate.
