COVID-19 AND LATIN AMERICA EVENT SERIES

The coronavirus pandemic is presenting complex and unforeseen challenges, impacting healthcare systems, financial markets, economies, and the lives and livelihoods of citizens all over the world. Most countries seem to be turning inward to deal with these crises, with yet unknown long-term effects on trade and integration, and pressures on social protection systems.

  • What will be the likely impact of the current crisis on the global and Latin American economies?
  • What is the role of regional and multilateral organizations in the economic recovery of the region?
  • What is the likely impact of the crisis on the Pacific Alliance, Mercosur, and regional integration generally?
  • Does the crisis offer opportunities to undertake tax, pension, labor, and other policy reforms?

The Dialogue is pleased to welcome Ángel Gurría, secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for a conversation on these and other topics. Since becoming secretary-general in 2006, Gurría has reinforced the role of the OECD as a ‘hub” for global dialogue and debate on economic policy issues. Originally from Mexico, he was minister of foreign affairs (1994 – 1998) and later minister of finance and public credit (1998 – 2000) in his country. Gurría has been a Dialogue member since 2001.
