Will Colombia See Success in its Wind Tender?

Colombia’s government is hoping to launch its first tender for licensing offshore wind blocks in December, Mines and Energy Minister Andrés Camacho said Oct. 24. The tender has been delayed this year as the ministry has been finalizing documents for the bidding process. How likely is the tender to occur in December, and what would constitute a successful bidding round? How attractive is Colombia to wind power companies? How important is the tender for President Gustavo Petro’s efforts to strengthen the country’s renewable energy sector?

Stefan Gsänger, secretary general of the World Wind Energy Association: “The world is moving toward more renewable energy. According to the World Wind Energy Association’s recently released half-year report, the world installed 38 percent more new wind power in the first half of 2023 as compared to 2022, and further acceleration is expected. Ahead of COP28, many countries are supporting the call for triple-installed renewable energy capacity by 2030. The reasons for this are not only the fight against the climate crisis and air pollution, but also economics, the accessibility of wind as a domestic resource and the strengthening of industrial capacity in one of the key technologies of the future. All these arguments apply to Colombia, which has so far played only a marginal role in the global wind power sector.
