Alexandre Barbosa is the head of the Regional Center of Studies for the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br), a department of the Information and Coordination Nucleus of Point BR (NIC.br), which works under UNESCO. Barbosa is responsible for leading research projects that generate information and communication technology-related data for monitoring national policies and international goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, Barbosa coordinates training programs in survey methodologies for Latin America and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa.

Barbosa is an internationally recognized expert in the field of information and communication technologies and has held several leadership positions in prestigious organizations. Barbosa served as chair of the Expert Group on ICT Household Indicators (EGH) at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) from 2012 to 2017 and is currently an expert in the OECD Working Party on Measurement and Analysis of the Digital Economy and on the Governance of Artificial Intelligence. Barbosa also serves as a member of the Brazilian Census Advisory Committee at the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and as a member of the Board of the Brazilian Center for Innovation in Education (CIEB).

Barbosa holds a PhD in business administration from the Getulio Vargas Foundation (Brazil), an MBA from the University of Bradford (UK), an MSc in computer science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Catholic University (Brazil). Barbosa has also done postdoctoral research at HEC Montreal (Canada).
