On December 2, 2021 Michael Shifter was decorated with the Cross of the Order of Isabel la Catolica by Ambassador Santiago Cabanas on behalf of H.M King Felipe VI. The Cross of the Order of Isabel la Catolica is a Spanish Civil order created in 1815 by King Ferdinand VII to recognize exceptional and meritorious work of recipients, especially related to services to the Americas.

In attendance were the members of the President's Leadership Council, a small group of business and community leaders from the region who share the Dialogue's commitment to democratic values, social equity, and prosperity. Shifter was pleased to share this special ceremony with Dialogue co-chair and former under secretary of state for political affairs Tom Shannon, as well as various Dialogue alumni and representatives from government and civil society.
