Understanding Brazil’s Protracted Crisis

Event Summary This event has passed.

In recent years it seems Brazil has hit rock bottom—and has yet to bounce back. A dual crisis of massive corruption scandals and the deepest recession in a century has upended politics and hobbled the government of President Michel Temer, whose approval ratings have fallen to 5 percent. With Temer accused of new corruption charges and the next presidential elections barely a year away, the political outlook is hard to predict. Uncertainty threatens both the incipient economic recovery and the important strides that have been made to fight impunity and reform institutions. Meanwhile, the crisis has taken a toll on Brazil’s standing in the world and has long-term implications for Latin America as a whole.

To unpack and explain the many facets of Brazil’s deep woes and explore their geopolitical consequences and diplomatic implications, the Dialogue is pleased to welcome Matias Spektor for an open and wide-ranging conversation. As the head of the Center for International Relations at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Brazil’s top policy think tank, Spektor is one of the country’s best-informed analysts and a widely respected scholar of Brazil’s role in the world.
