Washington, DC – On Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at a gala dinner in Washington, DC, the Inter-American Dialogue will present its seventh annual Leadership for the Americas awards. Luiza Trajano of Brazil will be presented with the Award for Social Equity, and Pierpaolo Barbieri of Argentina, CEO and Founder of Ualá, with the Award for Innovation and Social Impact. Laura Chinchilla, former president of Costa Rica, and Luis Alberto Moreno, former president of the Inter-American Development Bank, will present the awards.

The Leadership for the Americas Awards are given to individuals or organizations who have advanced the Dialogue’s mission – fostering democratic governance, social equity, and economic opportunity in our hemisphere.

Luiza Trajano, recipient of the Award for Social Equity and one of the world’s most influential businesswomen, is the chair of Magazine Luiza and Grupo Mulheres do Brasil. Trajano is widely recognized as an advocate for racial and gender equality in the workforce and for empowering victims of domestic violence.

Pierpaolo Barbieri, recipient of the Award for Innovation and Social Impact and the entrepreneur behind fintech unicorn, Ualá, has made great strides in financial inclusion by helping users formalize savings and facilitating lower-cost transfer of remittances.

“Luiza and Pierpaolo have demonstrated a commitment to inclusive economic recovery in the Americas, which is more critical than ever given the devastating economic impact of the pandemic coupled with rising inflation,” said Rebecca Bill Chavez, the president and CEO of the Dialogue. “We hope that their efforts to enhance inclusion and equity in the region will inspire others to do the same.”
