Inter-American Dialogue Recognized at 2017 Prospect Think Tank Awards

The Dialogue honored as the “One to Watch” among global think tanks and was runner-up in “US Energy and Environment” and “US International Affairs” categories.

London, UK – On Monday, July 10th, 2017, the Inter-American Dialogue was recognized at the 16th annual Think Tank Awards sponsored by the British publication Prospect. The Dialogue won the “One to Watch” award, which—along with “Best Think Tank”—was one of only two categories open to all think tanks, regardless of country or area of focus. The judges commended the organization for “for pushing the question of how the US relates to its neighbors.”

The Dialogue was also runner-up for the US awards on energy & environment and international affairs. The Energy, Climate Change & Extractive Industries Program “impressed the judges on US-Latin American energy investment in particular.” In the “US International Affairs” category, Prospect described the Dialogue as “again impressive… particularly for its examination of China-Latin America economic relations.”

This is the third time the Dialogue’s work has been recognized at the Think Tank Awards. In 2014, the Dialogue took home the award for “US Think Tank of the Year.” In 2016, the Dialogue was shortlisted in both the “US International Affairs” and “US Energy and Environment” categories, drawing praise for work that a judge described as “well-focused & timely.”

“To be honored on a global stage alongside many of the world’s oldest and most prestigious think tanks is a testament to the hard work and credibility of our members, experts, and staff,” said Dialogue President Michael Shifter. “This award highlights the critical importance of advancing a thoughtful, well-informed and balanced hemispheric dialogue, especially in unsettling times.”

The Think Tank Awards are among the most widely-cited measures of the quality and impact of policy research institutions.

The awards are an “annual recognition of the important and influential work carried out by Think Tanks across the globe” focusing on “the most pressing challenges facing people, governments and businesses today.” Winners are determined by an independent panel of more than 20 judges drawn from the highest levels of journalism, academia, and public service.
