Inter-American Dialogue named US Think Tank of the Year

Washington DC — The Inter-American Dialogue has won the US Think Tank of the Year Award 2014, given annually by Prospect Magazine, a prestigious British publication. Prospect Magazine stated that the Inter-American Dialogue “aims high: to shape policy debate in the Americas, and to advance democratic governance, economic opportunity and social equity. More than half of the Dialogue’s members and Board are from Latin America and the Caribbean. John Kerry delivered his first address on Latin America as Secretary of State at a Dialogue event, and it has done important work on remittances, among many other areas.”

Other organizations considered for US Think Tank of the Year 2014 included the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Foreign Policy Research Institute, Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, and Center for American Progress.

“I am thrilled that the Dialogue was recognized in this way. We will continue to generate fresh ideas and practical proposals to address pressing social, economic, and political challenges in the Americas.” said Michael Shifter, president of the Washington DC-based organization.

An independent panel of judges, chaired by Prospect Magazine editor Bronwen Maddox, assessed the nominees for evidence of influence on policy and on the public discourse, as well as on the quality of their research. The panel of judges included: Andrew Haldane, chief economist at the Bank of England; Bridget Kendall, the BBC’s diplomatic correspondent; Bill Emmott, former editor of the Economist; and, Paul Bledsoe, president of Bledsoe & Associates, a public policy advisory firm in Washington, DC.

The Think Tank Awards were established in 2001 to celebrate the efforts of think tanks across the globe to offer insights that help shape public and political thinking on fundamental policy questions facing communities, businesses and governments.
