JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Inter-American Dialogue is seeking a professional to shape, manage, and oversee the Dialogue’s longstanding and recognized work on Energy, Climate Change and Extractive Industries.

The Dialogue is Washington’s leading forum for exchange among opinion leaders of the Western Hemisphere, and an independent, nonpartisan center for policy analysis on economic and political relations in the Americas. Its more than 100 members from the United States, Canada, and Latin America include former presidents, prominent political, business, labor, academic, media, military, and religious leaders.

The Inter-American Dialogue’s Energy, Climate Change, and Extractive Industries Program seeks to improve understanding and communication on energy policy issues in Latin America through research, public events and roundtable discussions. By producing balanced analysis and convening policymakers, corporate leaders and industry experts, the program informs and shapes policies that promote investment while encouraging economically, socially, and environmentally responsible development of natural resources.

The director leverages and expands the Dialogue’s networks of senior policymakers, experts and industry experts and civil society leaders to manage the publication of high-quality policy reports, roundtables and public events. The program director also represents the Dialogue externally on energy and climate issues, participating in conferences and media interviews and publishing articles and op-eds. The director also manages the Dialogue’s Energy & Resources Committee, a group of corporations that support and engage with the Dialogue on critical energy, climate change, and extractive industries issues in the region.

The director is expected to identify priorities and lead fundraising efforts for this critical program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design innovative research and prepare timely, high-quality, and evidence-based analyses on the most salient program issues. Produce articles, interviews, blogs, and reports and engage with US and Latin American media to help disseminate information and constructively shape the policy debate;
  • Convene leading experts with diverse perspectives to formulate and advance actionable recommendations on hemispheric energy and climate issues via public and private fora, and briefings for public officials.
  • Establish and maintain networks of experts and other stakeholders from government, civil society, multilateral organizations, and the private sector in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
  • Travel periodically to the region to support program efforts and represent the Dialogue in various external policy discussions and external engagements.
  • Identify and pursue fundraising opportunities for the program with corporate, foundation and multilateral donors and develop proposals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interested candidates should have graduate training in a relevant field;
  • 8 or more years of work experience in international and public policy research on energy and climate change issues
  • Expertise and knowledge of key issues related to energy, climate change and extractive industries in Latin America;
  • Excellent organizational and management skills;
  • Strong research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills;
  • Network of contacts and ability to work effectively with variety of stakeholders in both the Latin American and Washington policy communities;
  • Fundraising experience is preferred
  • Full professional fluency in both Spanish and English (Portuguese is a plus).
