Mario López began his business career specializing in the field of construction, specifically in residential projects, housing developments, office buildings, shopping centers, road construction and road systems. Over the years, López has developed several important projects including Tigo, where he is a partner with Millicom International Celular, a company through which he has achieved a 58% participation in the Guatemalan telecommunications market with 11 million clients, a solar energy project with an installed capacity of 110 MW on solar panels that annually produces around 200 GWh of clean energy being the largest solar energy project in Central America, built and manages 5 shopping centers in Guatemala and an architectural complex in Paraguay with two 28-story office towers and a shopping center that has a hotel and gym.

López is the founder and president of Fundación Tigo which is dedicated to the construction of schools for children with limited resources and to date he has built 365 schools over 10 years. He is also an important contributor to the National Pediatric Oncology Unit and has initiated a program to help combat child malnutrition.

López holds a Civil Engineering degree from the University of San Carlos de Guatemala.
