Edmundo González Urrutia is a Venezuelan politician, diplomat, international analyst, and writer. He was the presidential candidate of the Unitary Platform political alliance for the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election.
González’s diplomatic career started in the 1970s where he was posted in Brussels as third secretary and later as first secretary in the US. In the 1980s, he was sent to serve in El Salvador as first secretary and business envoy and in Argentina as minister counselor. At the end of this decade, he was promoted to sub mission chief for the Venezuelan Embassy in the United Kingdom. González later turned his attention to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served as director of the Strategic Planning and Coordination Committee. In the 1990s, González served as the Venezuelan ambassador to Algeria. He was also the director general of international policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1998. In his last five-year post, he served as Venezuela’s Ambassador to Argentina until 2002. After dedicating decades to the foreign service, he pursued a political career. From 2009 to 2012, González was the international representative for the Democratic Unity Roundtable (UMD), a political opposition party.
In addition to his diplomatic and political career, González was a guest lecturer at the Universidad Metropolitana in Venezuela. González is a published writer of 25 pieces. He holds a BA in international affairs from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and an MA in international relations from the American University in Washington, DC. He is also fluent in English and French.
