Bolivia’s Road Ahead
One year after the referendum in which President Evo Morales failed to secure a path to a fourth term, Bolivia’s political future is uncertain. Morales’ party, the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), may defy the referendum and nominate him as its candidate, with several potential legal routes to doing so. While the opposition is in a stronger place than past years, many question its ability to unify and coordinate a common strategy. Meanwhile, Bolivia’s economy is slowing, although it continues to out-perform many of its neighbors; a drought has brought severe water shortages to La Paz, the capital; and persistent corruption scandals are magnifying voters’ desire for change.
