El futuro de los hidrocarburos en Colombia

The Future of Oil & Gas Exploration & Production in Colombia

The Inter-American Dialogue, Fedesarrollo and CAF-Development Bank of Latin America are pleased to co-host a private roundtable discussion on the future of oil and gas exploration and production in Colombia.

The collapse in global oil prices has led to a steep decline in investment in Colombia’s hydrocarbons sector and has reduced the value of its oil exports, depleting a key source of government revenue. Globally, oil companies are cutting capital expenditure budgets, making it more difficult for Colombia to compete for investment. Yet the government needs to continue licensing new areas for exploration in order to maintain the country’s reserve life of just six years.

How can Colombia ensure oil and gas exploration in new areas to replace reserves while maintaining production levels? How should the government determine tax levels for oil companies and divide royalties among local governments? How can Colombia balance environmental protection and community relations with the economic contribution of the hydrocarbons sector?

The invitation-only breakfast roundtable will convene government officials, business leaders and non-government organizations in Colombia to discuss these policy questions.
