The suspension of in-person classes in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic caused a crisis in most educational systems throughout the Latin American and Caribbean region, accompanied by the most prolonged period of school closures worldwide. This crisis has affected both the educational trajectories and the learning opportunities of all students, but in particular – and much stronger– those in situations of greater vulnerability.

As schools gradually reopen, education authorities in the region are beginning to document the adverse effects that the pandemic has had on school systems and students, from an increase in dropout rates to considerable learning losses and a considerable impact on students’ social-emotional development and wellbeing. Now, more than ever, it is essential to support plans for the safe reopening of schools with an emphasis on learning recovery.

This event series is organized around “Recovering Schooling and Learning after Covid-19” as part of a partnership between the World Bank Group and the Inter-American Dialogue. The goal of this collaboration is to provide information and support informed debate on the implementation of initiatives that promote higher levels of schooling and an effective learning recovery in the region. The first event in the series took place in December 2021 on early warning systems in the region. These next two events will take place on Thursday, March 31, and Wednesday, April 6, 2022. The series of events will continue in May and June, with other events focused on the state of education in LAC and the agenda of recovery and improvement of learning in the short-, medium- and long term.

In the event on March 31, panelists will discuss the importance of using learning assessment devices that are standardized and formative and have been used to measure learning outcomes, especially during the pandemic. On April 6, the conversation will center on the systematization of the evidence on learning recovery programs implemented during the pandemic in the region and internationally.

This event series will be held in Spanish and Portuguese, with simultaneous interpretation in English.
