ONLINE EVENT: Toward Pandemic Recovery in Latin America and the Caribbean—Exploring New Dimensions of Japan-US-LAC Interregional Cooperation

Event Summary This event has passed.

There is consensus among development professionals that the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region’s post-pandemic recovery will be best supported by a long-term strategy that incorporates new engines of growth while also supporting economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Although daunting, the challenges raised by the Covid-19 pandemic have, in some cases, prompted Japan, Latin American and Caribbean nations, and the United States to consider innovative ideas, partnerships, and cooperation arrangements in pursuit of pandemic recovery and broader development objectives. At the same time, Japan and the US have recently underscored their commitment to jointly advancing universal values and promoting inclusive economic prosperity, whether at home, in LAC, or other regions.

With these developments in mind, and given the extensive and persistent effects of the Covid crisis in LAC, our panel will consider the potential for enhanced LAC-Japan-US trilateral cooperation in support of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the region, whether through coordinated development assistance, trade facilitation, targeted investment, or by expanding cooperation in cutting-edge industries and technologies.

This event is the seventh in a series of public meetings co-organized by the Japan Association of Latin America and the Caribbean (JALAC) and the Inter-American Dialogue.
