Although there is still a gender gap in STEM, Coursera’s recent annual Global Skills Report found an increase in female enrollment in science, technology, engineering, and math careers, since 2019. However, within the STEM programs, the study observes an overrepresentation of women in human skill courses (such as user experience or personnel management), while they participate in lower rates than men in areas such as the development of operating systems, big data, or machine learning applications. Several areas in which women are underrepresented coincide with emerging skills that continue to grow in demand in economies around the world and which have the highest potential financial returns. Additionally, the study also highlights a significant gap in the level of skill that women are attaining in some of these key competencies, when compared to male learners.

Based on the findings of this report, the event aims to identify and discuss the challenges and opportunities to close the gaps – not just in access but in specialization and skill levels in key areas – for women in STEM. For this, the discussion panel will include the perspective of regional actors with key roles in the different stages of training and recruitment within women’s trajectory in STEM. The panel also includes representation from several countries – Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and a regional vision.
