ONLINE EVENT: Media and Democracy in the Americas V – Surviving Journalism in Latin America
The survival of journalists in Latin America has been threatened by government espionage, arbitrary arrests and detention, physical danger, disinformation and decreasing wages. 2022 begins as one of the most violent years against the press in Latin America and the Caribbean. Twelve journalists have been killed, seven of them in Mexico and three in Haiti. Throughout the region, hundreds of journalists are facing trial because of their work to hold governments’ accountable, and in El Salvador, there have been growing reports of espionage against journalists. Additionally, in the midst of growing freelance work, the demands of multimedia production, precarious minimum wages, and a critical reduction in advertising revenue, the press faces an uphill battle to conduct their work.
How can journalists survive under government pressure and how can organizations that defend freedom of expression protect journalists from physical harm? How should the international community raise the voice of journalists who have been exiled or villainized by governments? How can we work to improve the economic and labor issues facing journalists?
The Inter-American Dialogue, Fundamedios, Voces del Sur, and the Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas at the University of Miami are pleased to present the fifth annual Media and Democracy Conference.
