This coming March 20, the Organization of American States (OAS) will select a new Secretary General to serve a five year term from among three declared candidates. In the second of a series of conversations with the candidates, the Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to welcome Ambassador Hugo de Zela for a conversation about his background, views on the hemisphere, and vision for the OAS.
Ambassador de Zela currently serves as Peruvian ambassador to the United States. A career diplomat with 42 years of service, he has held various positions in the Peruvian government, including as vice minister of foreign affairs, permanent representative to the OAS, and ambassador to Argentina and Brazil. He also served as OAS Chief of Staff on two occasions from 1989-1994 and 2011-2015.
Ambassador de Zela will engage in a wide-ranging exchange with participants.
