The persistent outflow of Central Americans is now more than two decades-long, with at least one percent of the population leaving the region every year. Economic distress, natural disasters, and crime, among other harsh realities—aggravated by the pandemic—affect the lives of many citizens and have led to strong pressures to migrate. A new wave of migration is expected in the coming months.

What is the Biden administration’s proposal of $4 billion in cooperation likely to accomplish in addressing the causes that lead many Central Americans to flee north?
What is the most productive approach to violence prevention?
Should economic stabilization be a key feature of such an effort?
Would a stronger gender perspective on migration and development make a positive difference?
Are there new innovative approaches to tackle the root causes of migration?

The Inter-American Dialogue, Creative Associates International, and the International Organization for Migration are pleased to host a wide-ranging discussion to answer these and other questions. The event will include perspectives from the region and the US to help identify practical and realistic solutions to this crisis.
