Event Summary This event has passed.

For almost five months, Nicaragua has been shaken by protests and demonstrations that have left the country in limbo, with well over 350 dead. Both the United Nations and the Organization of American States have denounced widespread human rights violations committed by police and paramilitary forces. Amid mounting uncertainty and concern, other regional governments and the United States have sought to end the crisis and move towards a peaceful transition. To date, however, attempts at dialogue with the government of Daniel Ortega have proven fruitless. What are the prospects for restoring social peace in the country? What will the government do to stem the deteriorating economy, brought about by instability and violence?

To discuss these and other issues, the Inter-American Dialogue will host Valdrack Jaentschke, Nicaragua’s vice minister of foreign affairs, for an open, wide-ranging exchange on the current situation and the future of Nicaragua.
