A Conversation with Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso

Event Summary This event has passed.

President Guillermo Lasso’s White House meeting with President Joseph Biden on Monday comes on the heels of the US-Ecuador Partnership Act’s inclusion in the National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation and the presidential visit reflect the depth and breadth of the bilateral relationship, including the two countries’ shared interest in bolstering democracy during this time of democratic backsliding in the Americas. The US-Ecuador Partnership Act marks the first time in the history of the US Congress that legislation has been approved that is dedicated solely to the US-Ecuador bilateral relationship. This legislation will increase US cooperation with the government of Ecuador on initiatives that expand bilateral economic and commercial ties, advance inclusive economic development, deepen security and law enforcement assistance, support democracy, the rule of law and human rights, and strengthen environmental protections and stewardship.

The Inter-American Dialogue, the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center at the Atlantic Council, the Wilson Center Latin America Program, and the Center for Strategic International Studies Americas Program are pleased to welcome President Guillermo Lasso for a discussion on next steps to advance US-Ecuador relations following the presidential bilateral meeting, as well as on the outlook for democracy in the Western Hemisphere.

For more information on the US-Ecuador relationship visit the Inter-American Dialogue conversation with Ambassadors Ivonne A-Baki and Michael Fitzpatrick from December 7, 2022, titled Ambassador Dialogues: US-Ecuador Relations.
