The Crisis in Honduras: What Happened and What’s Next? 

As violent protests over the controversial presidential election enter their third week, Honduras is quickly becoming the next test case for democracy in the Americas. Incumbent president Juan Orlando Hernández’s apparent victory over challenger Salvador Nasralla sparked widespread accusations of fraud. The electoral process, with severe delays and missteps by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, was determined by the Organization of American States to be “marred by irregularities”—provoking concerns that the final result had been tampered with.
