Quality of education and economic growth

˙ PREAL Blog

We are pleased to share with you the 39th issue of our PREAL Documents series: ‘Quality of Education and Economic Growth,’ by Eric A. Hanushek and Ludger Wöβmann. While various analyses have typically emphasized the importance of the quantity of education, this study finds that the quality of education has even more powerful effects on individual earnings, on the distribution of income, and on economic growth.

The authors argue that the educational quality in developing countries (as measured by scores on standardized tests) is much worse than educational quantity (as measured by school enrollment and attainment). They conclude that in order to improve the quality of education, governments need to undertake significant institutional reforms and make spending on education more efficient. We also share with you the English version of the paper, which was published by the World Bank.
