On March 16, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a conversation with Assistant Secretary Brian A. Nichols to discuss the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to tackle the root causes of migration from Central America to the United States. Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, introduced the conversation, which was moderated by Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances, and Development program at the Dialogue.
On December 16, the Inter-American Dialogue, in partnership with the Japan Association of Latin America and the Caribbean, held a public meeting titled “Toward Pandemic Recovery in Latin America and the Caribbean—Exploring New Dimensions of Japan-US-LAC Interregional Cooperation,” to consider prospects for enhanced Latin American, Caribbean, Japanese, and US collaboration in support of regional recovery and sustainable development.
On March 1st, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue co-hosted a panel with the Washington Office on Latin America titled “The Venezuelan Judiciary and Crimes Against Humanity- Justice or Impunity?” to discuss the reports from a UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela.
On February 17, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a private roundtable with Colombian Finance Minister José Manuel Restrepo. The discussion centered on the country’s economic outlook for the next year and the measures needed for it to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.
On February 16, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue’s Corporate Program hosted a private roundtable for members to meet with Ilan Goldfajn from the IMF, Bill Maloney from the World Bank and Fitch Ratings’ Shelly Shetty to discuss the economic outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean.
This conference organized by the Regional Network to Measure Childhood Development (REMDI) presented the network’s work in the last two years while exploring the advances made in measuring early childhood development in the region.

On January 12th, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a panel of experts to explore the changing political situation in Nicaragua. The panel, called “Nicaragua 2022: Is a Political Transition Possible?” was aimed at discussing the extent of a possible democratic transition in Nicaragua in 2022.

On November 9, 2021, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a private meeting with members of the Colombian delegation for Compromiso Valle during their visit to Washington, DC. The private roundtable conversation included Maria Isabel Ulloa, executive director of Compromiso Valle and former Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia, Erlendy Cuero, defender of afro-descendant victims, and Remy Calero, CEO of AseoYa.
On September 8, the Education Program, together with Coursera, convened a public online event to present the findings of Coursera’s Global Skills Report and showcase new trends in the labor market.
On October 20, 2021, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) honored four civil society organizations with their 2021 Democracy Award. Santiago Canton, director of the Peter D. Bell Rule of Law Program at the Dialogue, took part in the first panel for the event, “Democracy and Governance in Central America: Defending Civic Space and Independent Media for Democratic Accountability.”

On October 13, 2021, the Inter-American Dialogue convened the virtual panel discussion on “Youth Employment and Sustaining Latin America’s Economic Recovery. In partnership with the United Way and Aspen Institute, the Inter-American Dialogue invited panelists to discuss how to create sustainable youth employment, highlighting the need to create better tools for job readiness and new frameworks to create opportunity for young people.
On October 7, 2021, the Inter-American Dialogue held the event “Debating the Facebook Oversight Board and Self-Regulation Mechanisms” to discuss the new report from the Peter D. Bell Rule of Law Program, Content Moderation and Self-Regulation Mechanisms: The Facebook Oversight Board and its Implications for Latin America.
While 2021 has been a year of transition for the energy sector in Latin America, it has also been a year of instability in the region’s political conditions and social environment. Under this context, industry experts, government officials and corporate representatives convened virtually to discuss the challenges, opportunities and changes in Latin America’s energy markets at the Fifth Annual Latin America Energy Conference.
