On March 16, 2022, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a conversation with Assistant Secretary Brian A. Nichols to discuss the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to tackle the root causes of migration from Central America to the United States. Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, introduced the conversation, which was moderated by Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances, and Development program at the Dialogue.

The countries of Central America’s Northern Triangle—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—are especially vulnerable to the severe and worsening impacts of climate change. This policy brief, the first in a series of three publications, describes the main challenges and provides broad recommendations for the US strategy on climate change adaptation in the region. It is based on inputs from the Task Force on Climate Change in the Northern Triangle, coordinated by the Inter-American Dialogue.

This report from the Migration, Remittances & Development Program presents the findings of a survey carried out with more than 1,000 US immigrants from eight Latin American and Caribbean nationalities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study identifies critical aspects that shaped migrants’ experiences in 2020 and early 2021, and, more importantly, the determinants of continuing to send money back home in times of crisis.
