In recent months, the Inter-American Dialogue has been honored to work with its network of partners to support pandemic response efforts in the Guatemalan communities where we work. Following a generous donation of Covid-19 testing supplies and PPE equipment from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Cities Alliance, the Dialogue was proud to facilitate coordination between regional entities, municipal authorities, hospitals, and donors to prioritize needs and distribute supplies.
This report from the Migration, Remittances & Development Program presents the findings of a survey carried out with more than 1,000 US immigrants from eight Latin American and Caribbean nationalities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study identifies critical aspects that shaped migrants’ experiences in 2020 and early 2021, and, more importantly, the determinants of continuing to send money back home in times of crisis.

On October 13, 2021, the Inter-American Dialogue convened the virtual panel discussion on “Youth Employment and Sustaining Latin America’s Economic Recovery. In partnership with the United Way and Aspen Institute, the Inter-American Dialogue invited panelists to discuss how to create sustainable youth employment, highlighting the need to create better tools for job readiness and new frameworks to create opportunity for young people.
The Western Hemisphere has been deeply affected by the Covid-19 crisis, which has countless consequences, but also offers the opportunity to develop more robust health systems. Mobilizing resources on a larger scale than previously expected from public and private sources will foster long-term sustainability and resilience of health systems, especially in the face of a health crisis.

This report provides a review of the trends that led to growth in family remittances in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2021. It points to a combination of factors that include increased migration, migrants prolonging their stay in the United States, use of digital transfers among others. It also introduces projections based on future migration and remittance sender changes in 2022.
