On November 4, 2020, the Dialogue convened the panel discussion “Innovating Healthcare in Latin America and the Caribbean.” Forming the basis for discussion, a recent World Bank survey indicated that treatments for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease, are suffering disruptions on a global scale. The conversation highlighted the need for innovation in health systems amidst both the global pandemic and the resultant breakdown of NCDs diagnosis and treatment.

On October 27, 2020, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted “Anatomy of MS-13 – Policy Implications for El Salvador and the US” using the groundbreaking publication by Steven Dudley, MS-13: The Making of America’s Most Notorious Gang, as a basis for discussion. The event featured remarks by Dudley and commentary by Sonja Wolf, and Ricardo Zúñiga. Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue moderated the conversation.

On September 25, the Regional Network for Measuring Child Development (REMDI) convened a virtual seminar to reflect on the lessons learned from the following Early Childhood surveys: ENDIS from Uruguay and ELPI in Chile.
On October 21, 2020, the Dialogue along with the International Crisis Group (ICG) hosted “Waiting for Peace: Violence Against Social Leaders in Colombia”. Panelists debated the findings of the ICG’s new report “Leaders Under Fire: Defending Colombia’s Front Line of Peace” and engaged in a discussion on the current rise in violence against social leaders and the implementation of the 2016 peace agreement.
On August 27, 2020, the first virtual session of a Housing Laboratory on Migration and Cities in Guatemala (LAV by its Spanish initials) was held. As Guatemala’s National Housing Council (CONAVI) works to update Guatemala’s National Policy on Housing and Human Settlements with strategies to increase access to decent, sustainable housing, this event contributed to discussions regarding the potential that remittances offer for financing the provision of decent and broader urban development.

Panelists discussed a set of comparative examples from which Chile can draw lessons from as well as considerations that Chile must make as they undergo the process of constitutional reform.

With presidential elections around the corner in the United States, the future of US energy diplomacy in the region is unclear. Industry executives, government officials, and corporate representatives convened to discuss the challenges and opportunities in today’s energy markets during the virtual Fourth Annual Energy Conference.
On September 30, 2020, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted “Venezuela’s Humanitarian and Human Rights Crises-The Search for Innovative Responses” to discuss the current humanitarian situation as well as present the findings of the Dialogue’s Rule of Law Program’s report, Corruption and Crisis in Venezuela: Asset Repatriation for Humanitarian Relief.

On September 29, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a wide-ranging conversation with Luis Alberto Moreno, the outgoing president of the Inter-American Development Bank, in recognition of his productive collaboration with the Dialogue and his contributions to our mission for more than two decades. Over 45 Dialogue members convened to listen to Moreno’s perspectives as he reached the end of his 15 years as president of the IDB.
