In Memoriam: Thomas J. Mackell

The Inter-American Dialogue mourns the loss of Board member Dr. Thomas J. Mackell Jr., who passed away on October 9, 2016 after a battle with cancer.  Mackell joined the Dialogue as a member in 2006 and became a member of the Board of Directors in 2008.

Mackell was special advisor to the president of the International Longshoresmen's Association, and to the AFL-CIO for political, legislative and public affairs. He served on the Board of the Foundation for Fiduciary Studies and Volunteers of America, and as chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond (2005 to 2008). He was also chair of United Benefits and Pension Services, Inc. and president of the Association of Benefit Administrators. 

From 1997 to 1999, Mackell served on the Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans Advisory Council to the US Department of Labor. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University, a master’s degree from Long Island University, and a doctorate from Rutgers University.
