Round Table with the Speaker of the Chilean Congress

Event Summary This event has passed.

Chile is at an important moment politically. While the government has pushed an ambitious reform agenda, it has to face corruption scandals and a slowing economy. On April 27, President Michelle Bachelet signed a new electoral law that replaced the old binomial system with a more proportional one. At the same time, the current government has pushed broader political reforms to modernize political parties, streamline the electoral process, and promote transparency. With these reforms, Chile is stepping away from 25 years of political tradition into a new electoral future.

Marco Antonio Núñez—the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Congress of Chile—will join the Dialogue for a round table on these and other issues facing the country. A doctor and public health expert, Núñez was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2005, and has served as its President since March 2015. He holds degrees from the University of Chile, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University.
