Argentina’s New Economic Era

A Conversation with Alfonso Prat Gay, Minister of Finance of Argentina

Since taking office last December, the administration of President Mauricio Macri has moved rapidly to normalize relations with the world and lift currency and trade restrictions to encourage investment and economic growth. The Argentine Congress gave the government the legal authorization it needs to settle a longstanding dispute with holdouts from the 2002 default.

After years of difficult relations with the United States under the previous administration, President Obama praised the speed of the reforms under President Macri during his recent visit to Buenos Aires. Now Minister Prat Gay has the challenging task of continuing reforms and reducing public deficit while taming inflation, jumpstarting a stagnant economy, and navigating a complex political landscape.

The Inter-American Dialogue, the McCourt School of Public Policy and the Latin American Policy Association at Georgetown University are pleased to co-host this conversation, with the support of the Embassy of Argentina in the United States and the Ministry of Finance of Argentina.
