A Conversation with Colombia’s Minister of the Interior

Event Summary This event has passed.

Now in his second term, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has accorded highest priority to the ongoing peace talks with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. The process has made advances and has now entered its final, yet most complicated, stage. To complement its peace effort, the Santos administration has put forth a series of reforms to deal with the country’s pending political, economic, and social challenges.

Juan Fernando Cristo, Colombia’s minister of the interior, will join the Dialogue for a wide-ranging exchange on the government’s plans for building peace in Colombia’s different regions and the current reform agenda. He will also discuss the implementation of Colombia’s 2011 law that provides reparations for victims of the armed conflict. Cristo was widely recognized for his role in drafting and getting congressional approval of that law. Before becoming interior minister in 2014, Cristo had a varied and distinguished career. He served as senator of the Liberal Party from 1998 to 2014, the last year as president of congress.
