Jessie J. Knight, Jr. was executive vice president of external affairs of Sempra Energy and chair of two Sempra subsidiaries, San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Gas Go., until November 2015. He became a member of the Inter-American Dialogue in 2015 and sits on the Board of Directors. Prior to joining Sempra, Knight served for seven years as president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the largest business organization in California and the third largest chamber of commerce in the western United States. From 1993 to 1999, he was the commissioner of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Previously, he was executive vice president of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and vice president of marketing for the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner newspapers. Knight began his corporate career in 1975 with Dole Food Company Inc., where he worked 10 years in both domestic and international operations, including five years as director of marketing for the US and Canadian pineapple business. Knight is a board member of Alaska Air Group and Alaska Airlines as well as a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the corporate council of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Knight earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University and holds an MBA from the University of Wisconsin.
