Harnessing the Anti-Corruption Wave in Latin America

Latin America today confronts an unprecedented series of corruption revelations across the region from Mexico to the Southern Cone. These scandals have been met with protests, public outcry, and voter discontent with politics as usual. Yet the policy responses have varied greatly by country and international coordination has so far failed to coalesce around a specific agenda. Whether Latin America can seize the moment to achieve greater transparency and accountability remains to be seen. The role the US plays to support regional anti-corruption efforts also remains critically important.

To discuss these developments, the Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to partner with Transparency International to present an open conversation on the regional path forward against corruption. An umbrella organization for over 100 locally established, independent chapters, Transparency International is a leading civil society group at the fore of the fight against corruption.

As the ad hoc state attorney of Peru in the 1990s and 2000s, José Ugaz prosecuted some of the most explosive corruption cases in Latin American history against former President Alberto Fujimori and his intelligence chief, Vladimiro Montesinos. Currently, he is the chairman of Transparency International and a widely cited expert on transparency and accountability issues. Michael Shifter is the president of the Inter-American Dialogue.
