Chile’s Domestic Policy Priorities

Event Summary This event has passed.

Today Chile is pursuing a challenging domestic policy agenda. President Michelle Bachelet has put forward a series of ambitious reforms, including plans to rewrite the 1980 Constitution. Some have expressed concerns about the pace and scale of the reforms, and their possible effects on the country’s investment and political climate. Corruption allegations have undermined public confidence in the country’s political and business establishments. The economy, while improving, has suffered mainly because of low copper prices. To discuss the main issues confronting Chile, the Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to welcome Jorge Burgos, minister of the interior and public security, for a wide-ranging exchange.

Jorge Burgos has had longstanding political career in Chile, acting as chief of staff of the Ministry of Interior, sub-secretary of the interior, ambassador to Ecuador, and as a deputy in the Chilean Congress for over 12 years. A Christian Democrat, Burgos was named minister of defense by President Bachelet in 2014 and then minister of the interior and public security in 2015.
