FEATURED

On April 9, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff made her first trip to the White House. In a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, Peter Hakim called on both countries to move their economic relations forward, a suggestion echoed by Dialogue member Moises Naim in the Financial Times. However, though member Abraham Lowenthal is optimistic in a Folha de S. Paulo article that the visit will build greater mutual trust between the two countries, Hakim and experts Paulo Soltero and Joao Augusto de Castro Neves, who spoke at the Dialogue on April 5, believe the visit will do little to move bilateral relations beyond the status quo. See more of Hakim's commentary on the visit on PBS NewsHour, O Estado de S. Paulo, and Al Jazeera English.

ABOUT
The Dialogue's program on Brazil and the Southern Cone examines the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chile. Issues include democratic governance, energy, trade capacity building, the environment, and international relations. The program regularly hosts meetings and events that draw important political analysts, politicians, NGO and labor leaders, and economists.
The Latin America Working Group of the Dialogue will meet in Brazil in December 2011, where it will convene the region’s leading analysts and practitioners to discuss Latin America’s democratic, economic, social, and political development as well as the role of regional institutions and the influence of hemispheric actors, such as Brazil.
