School choice in Chile

˙ PREAL Blog

It is worth noting that in Chile, traditional public schools (municipal education) have lost students to privately-managed, publicly-financed schools (private contract schools). It’s similar to the case of Washington, DC, where charter schools have gained students at the cost of traditional public schools. Chile is the only country in Latin America with a robust model of free choice in school selection, and it appears that parents are “voting with their feet” and sending their children to the privately-run schools.
